Unnecessary-Remake News of the Day: It’s official: Mandate Pictures released a statement today confirming that Spike Lee will indeed be directing the studio’s remake of Park Chan-wook’s critically acclaimed adaptation of Nobuaki Minegishi and Garon Tsuchiya’s manga series Old Boy.

“It’s a great honor to put this special project into the hands of such a gifted writer and iconic director,” Mandate President Nathan Kahane said in the statement.

A remake of the South Korean film has been in the works for a while, with various actors and directors — from Justin Lin to Steven Spielberg, and even Will Smith — attached at times.

To this day, I still can’t fathom why Denzel Washington didn’t win the Academy Award for Best Actor in his portrayal of Malcom X. In my opinion, he got robbed. Malcom X was one of the best movies of the 90’s. That being said…

Why, Spike Lee, why do you have to remake Old Boy? If there’s one movie that should NOT get a Hollywood make-over, or any make-over at all, it’s Old Boy. Leave a good thing alone.
